Taking care of yourselves as both a new clinician and as a seasoned clinican is important. We learned breifly today about Vicarious Trauma. Just wanted to spread some awareness of this, and perhaps you can explore this further:

Vicarious Trauma: is a transformation in the self of a trauma worker or helper that results from empathic engagement with traumatized clients and their reports of traumatic experiences.

So Close!

I really can’t believe there is less than a month of school left in my life (20 or so years) as a student! Today was quite monumental as I finished my last exam of my school life… ever. Wow. Just the other day (picture) we had our poster presentation day in the “evidence-based practice” class. I hope to be a clinician that contributes to our small library of research. There needs to be more so that us SLPs can continue to practice based on robust research and evidence backing up our decisions.

Then again, with our caseloads stretched so thin, how can we really do this plus attend to our clients, and get through the piles of paperwork? Ahem, government, hear that? Could we have more positions, please? But that… is for another post…

Very sad about the #BostonMarathon news. Positive thoughts to Boston today <3

Snap out of it! I’m 37 and need to remind myself to follow the photographed advice, even as I type this very entry! If you’re on this same path, maybe you’ll need to remind yourself of this throughout life, or maybe you’ll show true brilliance and learn it early.

So maybe you’ll want to print out the above photograph and tape it to your fridge, or inside your Netter’s; maybe laminate it to the back of your iPhone, on your laptop or the back of your school/hospital ID; maybe tape a copy to your dog’s collar, inside a running shoe, to the middle of your planned summer travel paper wall map (go old school), your Delta SkyMiles card…

Just listened to a fantastic and very informative (weekly!) broadcast by Jennifer M Hatfield MHS ccc/sp. Wow! On the topic of that very touchy subject, “to tell or not to tell”, when a family member or friend has a communication disorder and you’re wondering if you should say something.

Takes a look at traumatic brain injury (TBI) of professional athletes, also known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Our class recently had a couple of lectures on TBI, and the SLP mentioned the “brain bank” for researching CTE.

Working with patients with TBI is both a rewarding and a difficult job as an SLP. Do you with with TBI?

Wow! I had to review the News-2-You website for a class project and I absolutely was impressed! Articles on current events are published weekly including picture supports, a customized communication board (high-tech), and word-to-speech options as well, catered to special needs students and beginner readers. I’m SO happy I stumbled upon this website, I will use it in the future. They also have a fancy picture-symbol system w/ 12,000 symbols!

This is the camp I attended in the summer as a Graduate Student (SLP)!

If you are able to attend, support, or even check out their website, I think you will find inspiration, as I did at my life-changing week at camp.

I hope to attend future camps as an SLP (although I’m unable this year due to a friend’s wedding)!
